Twelve years elapsed between finding a publisher for this book and actually getting it published. The saga unfolds in my essay from issue 81 of Canadian Notes & Queries, The Gutter Years.
A "mongrel" is a person or thing (say, a country) of mixed origin, or of uncertain ancestry. Such identities define five Windsor, Canada teens who narrate the story of Mongrel, but its apotheosis is Gunther: American-born, Canadian-raised, of German stock. Racist. Misogynist. Bully. Quarterback. He lays out his weltanschauung in this excerpt.
Mongrel is available from Mansfield Press, under the "Stuart Ross Imprint," or from McNally Robinson and other bookstores.
